Through required course participation, in-house lectures, workshops, individual coaching, and recurrent observations and evaluation, Gateway faculty and therapists acquire the knowledge and instructional skills required for successful remediation of a Gateway student’s reading, writing, math, or other learning disability.
Run by staff developers and program leadership, the primary areas of focus of Gateway’s professional development program are:
the impact of language on how a student thinks, feels, and learns
how to use language when teaching students with language-based learning disabilities, attention deficit, and other learning disabilities, in accordance with the Classroom Language Dynamics program

Director of Lower School (July 1, 2026 Start Date)
General Responsibilities of the Director of Lower School Include:
Ensuring consistency between The Gateway School mission and all the activities within the Lower School.
Delivering and maintaining a program that is designed to meet the needs of Gateway students, is pedagogically consistent with the Middle School program, and is grounded in accepted “best practices” in special education, as well as evidence-based research into effective, reliable instruction and curriculum for students with language-based learning disabilities.
Ensuring that the principles of The Gateway School Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Statement are upheld by all constituents, and infusing these values into all facets of the Lower School program.
Specific Responsibilities of the Director of Lower School Include:
Overall Program Management
Supervising and evaluating Lower School faculty and specialists.
Providing educational and community leadership that models Gateway’s core values.
Creating and maintaining a learning environment in which students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.
Leading the work to support student behavior expectations and strategies for success.
In collaboration with members of the Program Team, coordinating student assessments to evaluate student progress and overall effectiveness of the program, and training faculty in the administration and interpretation of assessments.
Instruction & Curriculum
In collaboration with the Head of School, Director of the Middle School, and the Director of Language and Literacy, articulating a vision for the instruction of students from Lower School through 8th grade and the scope and sequence of the skills, strategies, and content to be learned.
Ensuring direct, explicit, multisensory instruction is used with integrity by all teachers.
Collaborating with the Program Team on the implementation of guided planning and the creation of subject teams and the organization of their work.
Maintaining Strong School and Family Partnerships
Collaborating with members of the Program Team and Head of School to develop parent education programming that is meaningful for Gateway families.
Maintaining regular, timely communications with families about Gateway’s program and student progress.
Proactive planning to support student success in academics, behavior, and peer social interactions.
