The Gateway Schools

Letter from the Director of Partnerships and Outreach, Dr. Jossie O'Neill

Welcome to The Institute for Partnerships & Outreach! We are pleased that you took the opportunity to visit the website and learn how the mission of The Gateway Schools reaches beyond our own students and families. Outreach activities and educational partnerships allow ideas from our schools to be shared with the broader community. The opportunities presented and relationships created also foster the continued development of our own ideas and practices.

The Founding Director of The Gateway School of New York, Elizabeth Freidus, believed strongly that the role of an expert teacher is to carefully, mindfully, and purposefully observe a child in order to discover how best to teach that particular student. Once such understanding is gained by the teacher in each particular situation, the child can then be most effectively taught how to solve problems so that he or she can overcome challenges in both academic and social contexts. Partnerships & Outreach devotes its work to promoting and expanding these ideas, as embodied in Mrs. Freidus' speeches, writings, and her work at The Gateway School of New York.

I invite you to enjoy and benefit from the information shared here on these pages. We at The Gateway Schools hope that it will provide you with insight as to what we do beyond our immediate community that makes us unique. Our partnership and outreach work makes us the kind of educational institution where professionals, non-profit organizations and policymakers come to collaborate on behalf of students with learning differences, and each of our partnerships is unique. Please keep in mind that we are always seeking to establish new partnerships with like-minded organizations.

If you would like to partner with The Gateway Schools on a project of shared interest, please contact Dr. Jossie O'Neill, Director of Partnerships & Outreach at 212-777-5966 Ext. 817.
