The 61st Street Community Mural!

The Gateway Schools and The Museum Magnet School for Inquiry, Innovation & Imagination are proud to announce that the community mural on West 61st Street is complete. Students of the schools worked together with teachers Leat Klingman and Antiqua Lewis and local artist Sam Meyerson to design and paint the wall together. The collaboration between the schools was supported by Border Crossers, New York City Councilmember Gale Brewer and made possible due to the generosity of The Citizens Committee for New York City. The mural was unveiled to the community June 14th where alum parent Edmund Hollander of Edmund Hollander Landscape Design was honored and thanked for his long time support and continuing effort to beautify 61st Street. Come and see the masterpiece for yourself! It is truly a great addition to our block.
Thank you to all who contributed in the design and creation of the artwork and all who gave constant encouragement to our student artists!
2011 Life After Gateway
Life After Gateway is a special night when graduates of The Gateway Schools come back to campus. This spring, alumni Bryan Stromer C'06, Laurence Juredem C'76 and Sarah Cogen C'06 sat on a panel and discussed their various achievements since graduating. Each told a unique story that provided current parents, teachers and incoming families with examples how Gateway has helped them develop strategies to succeed. We are proud of Bryan, Laurence and Sarah and wish them all the best for a fun filled summer!
Puerto Rico 2011: The Gateway Lions Softball Tour
The Gateway Lions Softball Team traveled to Puerto Rico this spring for seven days of practices, games and fun in San Juan. The following article was written by Gateway Lion and 7th grader, Sam Jackman.
Day 1:
It all began when the whole softball team went to the Gateway School. We dropped off all of our bags down in the basement area. One of the kids, Marti Levine had this gigantic bag. I asked her why her bag was so big.
"The reason is that you know how girls like to pack a lot and the boys?don't, that is the reason."
I knew that already but I just wanted to clarify.
The people who came on the trip were:
The Players:
#1 Marti Levine, catcher and our closer
#3 Matthew Pfeffer "the natural, "pitcher and second baseman
#4 Alec Kerdell "the franchise," shortstop and pitcher
#6 Margot Cohen second baseman
#10 Bryan Tirone "T-Rex," outfielder
#11 Alan Steinberg outfielder
#12 Blaine McIndoe outfielder
#13 Cody Stillman third baseman and shortstop
#15 Adam Kleiner "the bulldog," first baseman
#20 Jack Bradley "Kung fu panda," "big papi," catcher and third baseman
#28 Aidan Mayer-Ahern outfielder
#31 David Gottleib "Big D," outfielder
#42 Sam Jackman catcher and third base man
#50 Mr. Greenberg assistant coach
#52 Max Brooke "Max a million," outfielder
The Coaches:
#33 Mr. Perez, Coach
#50 Alan Greenberg, Assistant Coach and parent to Cody Stillman
The Teachers:
Dr. Jossie O'Neill
Sara Keisel
Vanessa Giardiana
The Chaperone:
Ian Jackman, parent to Sam Jackman
We went to our normal classes and then at 10 o'clock we went on the bus to go to the airport. At 11 o'clock, we got to the airport and started to check in. After that we went through security which wasn't a problem. We went to the food court to get lunch. The plane wasn't going to take off for 3 hours. I said to my dad, "I know you like to be at the airport very early but is this too early for you?" He answered, "Yes, it's a little too early for me."
Then we went to our gate to hang out. I was watching a baseball game on my iPad. Mr. Perez asked the kids to think of numbers from 1-30 for our homework assignment then at the hotel he gave us the assignment. Then it was time to go on a grand journey to Puerto Rico. The flight wasn't that bad. We took off on time and it only took three and a half hours and landed 20 minutes early. We had to wait because we were there a little too early and there were not enough gates for the amount of planes. We got off the airplane to get our bags. We hopped into 2 vans to go to the Doubletree by Hilton hotel. We had a very late dinner because we got to the hotel at 8:30. Then, we unpacked everything and then we went to bed for the night.
Day 2:
Everyone got up pretty early. We went to a place called Bebos, a Puerto Rican restaurant, to have breakfast. Adam had pancakes, I had the Caribbean omelet which had pepper and cheese and ham.
The whole team went to this fort called El Morro. The fort looked very ancient. It is a national landmark for Puerto Rico. We also went to Old San Juan. We had the local snow cones. We had lunch there. It was pretty fun. Everyone was tired but then we had to go practice. We took a van to the field. The field is called De La Barra Stadium. The practice was fun. We did a lot of drills and stretches. After the practice Mr. Perez said, "That was by far the best practice that Gateway has ever had."
Everybody was happy that the coach said that. We went back to the hotel to go swimming and relax. We ate dinner and then we went to bed after the long day.
Day 3:
We got up early again. We had breakfast at this other restaurant called Under the Trees. First, we had practice with our sister school, Colegio Caliope. Some of the players had never played a softball game before we came to their field. The coaches had four stations; the first station was practicing throwing. The next station was infield work. The following station was practicing to catch fly balls in the outfield. The last station was hitting. The Caliope kids were so nice and kind to all of us. Then we played a simulated game to practice a game situation.
Then we went to a museum of Puerto Rican modern art called Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico. Jossie's sister Mari gave us a tour of the museum because she made some of the paintings. That was interesting. There was one painting of a room. It looked like it was in the 1950s Then we went back to the hotel to eat dinner at Under the Trees again. Then everybody went to bed.
Day 4:
It was game day. We had breakfast at Under the Trees again. Then, we went to the vans to the field to play the first of two games. The only problem was that the previous night it was raining and the dirt was wet and muddy. The grounds crew was only one person. We had to play on the grassy area in left field. The other problem was that there was a big storm coming right in the way of the stadium.
The game started and of course the rain started to come down hard. There was some thunder and lightning to add to the storm. The Lions took an early lead and we never looked back. We had two rain delays. The first one was the first ever rain delay in Gateway Softball history. We didn't have one single rain delay all of last year. It was raining so that we had to suspend the game until the next day.
We went back to the Caliope School. It was a very small school with 42 kids and 4 classrooms. It was nice to meet the kids and we ate lunch there. We had chicken and rice and beans with plantains. I loved the lunch. We went back to the hotel to go to the pool and the beach to relax after the long day.
We went to Under the Trees for dinner again! Then we went back to the hotel to finish our homework assignment. We did and then we went to bed.
Day 5:
We got up and had breakfast at Under the Trees again. Then we went to the field to finish up the first game. The Lions won that game 10-6. Then, we started the second game. We also jumped to an early lead and set the tone for the rest of the game. The tension was mounting with the score 10-7 with the bases loaded and two outs. One of the batters hit a grounder to the shortstop Cody and then he threw it to Sam Jackman to get the force out at third base to win the game 11-8.
We went back to the school to have lunch. We had pizza and a cake to honor David Gottlieb's birthday which was the next day. Then, we had a grandstand kind of a closing ceremony. The other team gave us awards, a red baseball cap with a big C on it, and a headband. It was very sweet. We went back to the hotel to go to the beach and the pool. We went to this Italian restaurant which was right on the water. I ate ravioli. The setting was beautiful because was right by the water. Then we went back to the hotel to pack everything up and we went to bed.
Day 6: The Traveling Day
We woke up and then had breakfast. Dr. O'Neill took us around on a tour of where she used to live. She took us to a store to buy souvenirs. Not all of the people left to get back to New York City. Some people stayed because their parents were there already and some people couldn't travel on that day.
The plane landed in Boston because there was a terrible storm in New York. They landed in Boston at 8 o'clock. They had to stay on the airplane for 4-5 hours. Then they landed at 2 in the morning in New York City.
Day 7:
Sam, Ian and Alec went back home to New York City.
In the end this trip was a success because all the people had a good time and the team learned to play better together.
