2019 – 2020 School Year
For over 50 years, The Gateway School has transformed the lives of bright children who experience academic difficulty as a result of language-based learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, reading and writing disorders), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), executive function disorder, visual-spatial or auditory processing difficulties, and/or gross and fine motor coordination issues. Located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Gateway enrolls 205 students between the ages of 5-14. In small classes with a low student-to-teacher ratio, faculty and therapists meet students where they are, individualize instruction accordingly, and develop them into skilled, strategic, independent learners who are capable of advocating for themselves and who are prepared to transition into mainstream school and life.
The Gateway Lower School serves students ages 5-10 and often classes are co-taught, so substitutes would often be collaborating with a Gateway teacher. The Gateway Middle School serves 5th to 8th grade students and substitutes must be able to connect with and support adolescents. Suitable candidates will have a strong desire to work with students with language-based learning disabilities and ADHD, a confident and nurturing classroom presence, and the capacity to relate well to students. Candidates should demonstrate ability to implement provided lesson plans, the flexibility to adjust and supplement as needed, and a desire to problem-solve and collaborate. Per-diem substitutes can request to be considered for opportunities in one or both divisions for a full (8:00 – 3:30) or half (8:00 – 12:00 OR 11:30 – 3:30) day.
